Accessible usable web design

Now that my exams are over, I can finally start to focus on my thesis project, which I think many of you will be interested in.

Over the years, many sets of web usability and accessibility guidelines have been created. Often these guidelines converge. For example, when specifying an image in HTML, you can also specify alternative text for that image. This will make the site more usable for all users because some may not be able to view graphical images in their Web browser. However, for blind users, specifying alternative text is essential because they depend on the text to understand the content of the page. This is a case where the convergence is mutually beneficial, but is this always the case? If not, what can be done in order to make a website both accessible and usable?

To answer these questions, I’ll investigate these points of convergence and identify both the positive and negative crossovers. Based on these findings, I will create designs that are both accessible and usable and then test them with both disabled and non-disabled users. The ultimate goal of my research is to put forward actionable recommendations put that are backed up with empirical research.

I’ll soon be creating a project space on unraveled to document my research, including the accessible and usable solutions that I create.

  1. Good one Josh, I for one will be following your progress. I’m particularly interested in the apparent trade-off between the sighted user’s usability and a non-sighted user’s usability for the same design.

I presume one of the first stages of your research will be to accumulate existing sources of ‘actionable recommendations’?

    Best of luck.

  2. Adam: I’ll be creating the recommendations myself. Currently, I’m analyzing usabiliy guidelines and accessibility guidelines for crossover points. After that, I’ll be creating designs and testing them. Only at that point will I write any recommendations.

  3. Good work on trying to make things more usable. I’d recommend not following the lead of Tiffany.com - check out the review here at frogreview.com
