  1. I’d really like to know how much money these authors make from their books. I’ve heard authors get financially raped in their book contracts as much as musicians do.

    Then consider that these are tech books, which don’t exactly have the mass appeal of a NYT bestseller.

    So do the authors truly write for profit, or because they enjoy writing, or because a book raises their employability or consulting status as a professional?

  2. Interesting question, I’d like to know the answer to that myself.

    I would guess the largest reason is to share knowledge and hope that people find the knowledge worthy enough to use on a regular basis. Knowing that thousands of people are doing or thinking something because you wrote about it in your book will give you a pretty great feeling. The second largest reason, as Jack mentioned, is to raise their employability and professional reputation. Finally, they do it for money. The money from the book contract is probably going to be slim, but the money that they’ll make in their future jobs because they wrote a book will make that small book profit worth it.
